United States Note
Red seal. Issued by the Treasury, not a Federal Reserve bank.
A red seal is a United States Note, issued by the Treasury rather than by a Federal Reserve Bank. Collectors also call them Legal Tender Notes. The obligation text on the face is the Treasury's, which is why the seal is red instead of green.
Production ended in 1971. Every red seal in circulation or in a collection is more than fifty years old. The $2 and $5 red seals are the ones people still find in old envelopes. A red-seal star combines that issue with a replacement serial.
Condition is user-entered. StarNote Atlas does not professionally grade or authenticate currency. Entries reflect user-reported custody, not legal ownership certification.
