Star note
Replacement note. The ★ marks a smaller print run.
United States paper money is printed in sheets. When a sheet is spoiled during printing, inspection, or numbering, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing does not send that sheet out. It prints a replacement sheet for the same denomination and series.
The replacement uses a star at the end of the serial instead of the usual suffix letter. That is the mark collectors mean by a star note. The star is not a grade, a signature, or a claim about what the note is worth.
Silver Certificate
Blue seal. Once redeemable for silver.
A Silver Certificate has a blue seal. It was once redeemable for silver coin or silver bullion. The United States issued them from 1878 to 1964. The Treasury stopped redeeming them for silver in 1968.
They remain legal tender at face value. Collectors keep them for the blue seal and the series, not because a bank will hand over silver. A blue-seal star is both a Silver Certificate and a replacement.
Condition is user-entered. StarNote Atlas does not professionally grade or authenticate currency. Entries reflect user-reported custody, not legal ownership certification.
